The story
I was looking through Upwork for Unity projects when I found a nonprofit asking for a high schooler to lead a group of students. They wanted to turn their board game about homelessness into a mobile game.
I worked with three other high school students and taught them Unity and some coding as we went. They lived far away, so we did everything through online meetings.
Behind the build Tools & technical details
Unity · C#
We used Unity and C# to adapt the board game for mobile, with GitHub for shared development. The work included the game board, player selection and resource tokens.
The hard part
Teaching online was hard sometimes. We also kept running into merge conflicts, which was how I started learning GitHub. I was figuring out how to work with other people while helping them learn too.
What came out of it
The nonprofit featured the game at an awards banquet. Seeing a game I’d helped lead being shown there was really cool. Teaching could be frustrating, but I liked having people under my wing.
