The story
I saw Cal AI and thought taking a photo of food to estimate calories was a really cool idea. I wanted to bring food tracking together with mood and journaling, so AI could help me connect what was going on in my day.
I wanted my life to be in sync with my goals. That’s where the name came from. I’ve had trouble with low appetite and low energy, and using it has helped me pay more attention to what I eat.
How it works
Follow the signal
Parts:
- iOS app: Expo, React Native
- Vercel API: TypeScript functions
- Language model: GPT-4.1 mini
- Supabase: Postgres, auth, RLS
- Reminder cron: daily, Expo push
Connections:
- iOS app to Vercel API: entry + token
- Vercel API to Language model: prompt
- Vercel API to Supabase: check session
- iOS app to Supabase: sync events
- Supabase to Reminder cron: push tokens
- Reminder cron to iOS app: reminders
Behind the build Tools & technical details
React Native · Expo · TypeScript · Supabase · Vercel Functions · OpenRouter (GPT-4.1 mini)
The Expo and React Native app logs meals, exercise, sleep, water, medication, mood and journal entries. A TypeScript API structures plain-English entries with a language model, and Supabase handles sign-in and data sync.
Requests require authentication and have rate limits and timeouts. AI estimates are validated, and the app includes account deletion and a privacy policy. It is not on the App Store.
The hard part
The AI didn’t always return useful information. Sometimes it gave a real meal a calorie estimate of zero. I had to catch those problems and make sure entries stayed saved correctly on my phone and in the database.
What came out of it
I’ve only used LifeSync myself. I haven’t released it, but it’s helped me be more mindful of my meals and how I’m taking care of myself.
